The Key West Musicians Festival was started in 2011 by locals, Ken and Laura Floyd and Steve Mellette in support of local music on their tiny island and also in support of a local charity, Sister Season. Twenty percent of the proceeds of all KWMF products are donated to Sister Season Fund along with a personal donation from Laura and Ken. www.sisterseasonfund.com

Key West Musicians Festival I love music. All manner of music. Punk, polka, opera, blues, klezmer, you name it. This in and of itself is somewhat remarkable as I grew up in a home with almost no music. My father had one Limelighters album and my mother listened almost exclusively to Johnny Mathis. But it was the 60’s, and the times they were a changing. Music was everywhere. Incredible music from incredible musicians, and I soaked it all in. Fast forward a whole bunch of years past film school, one marriage, three kids, and a very high profile career as a television director in New York, and like so many others before me, I quit my job and moved to Key West. I landed a gig with a local tourist TV channel producing a program called Club Hour with my dear friend, Tom Luna. Our job was to go out and drink while showcasing the Key West nightlife. We could do anything we wanted to. And we did. We interviewed bartenders, servers, cab drivers, strippers, cops, chefs, the occasional tourist, and musicians. Lots and lots of musicians. And we were immediately struck by the sheer amount of talent living on this little island. No matter the level of technical skill they might possess, one thing they all shared was a love of the music, and a love of Key West and its people. You’d be hard pressed to find a more generous, caring, and dedicated group of people anywhere. So along came a few local music lovers, Ken and Laura Floyd and Steve Mellette, who decided to take on the greatest experiment in cat herding ever attempted: gathering all that incredible talent together in one place for a weekend long festival. And to the amazement of all involved, it worked! Two big days, dozens of acts, and as is so often the case in Key West, a terrific fundraiser for a local charity. Consider this a “Whitman’s Sampler” of Key West music. You never know what you’re going to get but you’ll probably like it and want more. See you at the next Key West Musician’s Festival.
